Joe was retired from the United States Postal Service. He had previously been proprietor and head barber at the Village Barber Shop in Gary, and in his retirement was an usher at the Gary RailCats Steel Yard Stadium. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam Era, and a member of Our Lady of Grace Church in Highland. Joe was a graduate of Bishop Noll Institute in East Chicago, and remained a loyal supporter of the Warriors athletics program throughout his life. He was a very successful bowler, a regular in leagues at Plaza Lanes in Highland. Joe is best known for his deep love of baseball, both as a player and as a fan, especially of the New York Yankees. Joe cherished his family and friends, and he will be dearly missed.
In honor of Joe's wishes, cremation was chosen and there are no services scheduled. His family plans to organize a celebration of his life for family and friends at a later date.
Part of Joe's decline in health included some symptoms of dementia, though thankfully he knew his family and continued to talk about baseball until the end. Memorial contributions may be made in Joe's loving memory to the Alzheimer's Association to support care and research toward a cure for all forms of dementia, act.alz.org.
