George Nicholas Julius January 23, 1962 – December 11, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved George Nicholas Julius, who left us peacefully on December 11, 2025. George was a kind soul, a dedicated family man, and a true sports enthusiast who embraced life with an open heart and a carefree spirit. Born on January 23, 1962, in Gary, Indiana, George was the son of Nicholas and Mary Ann Julius. He grew up in Highland, Indiana, where he graduated from Highland High School in 1980, excelling in both varsity basketball and football. George was a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region, where his roots and his love for his community ran deep. George earned his Bachelor's Degree from Indiana Wesleyan University and went on to have a successful 35-year career in heavy manufacturing. He worked as a supervisor at Mason Corporation, School City of East Chicago, Carmeuse Lime, and ArcelorMittal. His colleagues admired his strong work ethic and dedication. In 1989, George married Mary Hallagan. Together, they built a life in Crown Point, IN, and raised three wonderful children: Daniel Julius (Detroit), Allison and Michael Gaston (Noblesville), and Adam Julius and Taylor Winiecki (Dyer). George's passion for sports extended beyond playing to coaching. He spent countless hours coaching youth basketball, soccer, and Jr. Bulldog Football, dedicating 13 years to mentoring young athletes. Whether by the pool, on beach vacations, or tending to his garden, George found joy in the little moments and shared them with his family, friends, and neighbors. After retiring, George returned to Highland, where he spent his days enjoying time with his many friends, watching his beloved Chicago Bears, IU basketball, and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals. He made Thursday casino trips a tradition and enjoyed dinners out with his lifelong friends and spending time with his best buddy Duke. George’s love for family was immeasurable. He cherished his role as a grandfather, eagerly anticipating his frequent FaceTime calls with his granddaughter, Lyla. He took great joy in trips to the pumpkin patch, Greek Picnic dinners, and the warmth of holiday gatherings. George was preceded in death by his father, Nicholas Julius, in-laws Frank and Patricia Hallagan and his nephews, Mitchell Thieme and Steven Hallagan. He is survived by his devoted mother, Mary Ann Julius; his siblings Evangeline Roberts (Shawn) and Christopher Julius (Thamie); his sisters-in-law Maureen Gerber (Joe) and Erin Thieme (Doug); his brother-in-law Patrick Hallagan (Meredith); and his many cherished nieces and nephews, including Melissa Ebel, Katie Kinson, Maureen Biase, Kathleen Bowie, Molly Hallagan, Nichole Roberts, Joe Gerber, Michael Gerber, Ryan Thieme, Kevin Hallagan, Connor Hallagan, Nicholas Roberts, and his nephew and godson Nicholas Julius. He is also survived by his beloved granddaughter Lyla Gaston, and the family eagerly anticipates the arrival of his granddaughter, baby Lily Gaston, due in June.
