Sophrona M. Brooks age 80 of Portage, formerly of Griffith, passed away on Monday October 9, 2017.

She is survived by her children Steven Brooks and Lisa (Jerry) Smith; grandchildren Emily R. (Chris) Madison and Joshua W. Smith; great grandchildren Ella Madison,  Noah Madison, and one more on the way; mother Edna Smith; and by her brother David (Sarah) Smith.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harold "Steve" Brooks, her father Hillard Smith, and by her mother-in-law Anna Mae Heidel.

Funeral services will be held on Friday October 13, 2017 at 7:00pm at WHITE FUNERAL HOME with Pastor James Williams officiating. Burial will be private at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville.

Friends may meet with the family on Friday October 13th from 2-7:00pm at WHITE FUNERAL HOME located at 921 W. 45th Ave. in Griffith, IN.

Sophrona adored her grandchildren.  She attended The Wesleyan Church in Merrillville and taught Sunday school there.  She bowled for many years and coached kids and she painted and created counted cross stitch art. Sophrona also enjoyed collecting teddy bears and she was an avid reader and book collector.

She was a true fighter, battling and defeating lung and brain cancer. She was loved and will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or to the Dementia Society of America.
