Obituary

Marilynn Chynoweth, age 79, formerly of Griffith, IN passed away Sunday, July 7, 2024, after a battle with dementia.

Marilynn was born on September 28,1944 to John and Frances (Schroeder) Rietman of Hammond, Indiana. She had an older brother John. She lived in Hammond throughout her childhood and attended Hammond Public Schools followed by Moser Secretarial School in Chicago, IL.

She married Raymond Russel Chynoweth on October 9, 1965. Ray and Marilynn celebrated 58 years married, and together enjoyed hosting parties and taking trips to spend time on the lake. She often reminisced about how much she loved fishing on family vacations.

Marilynn and Ray have two sons, Timothy Raymond Chynoweth (Brandi Chynoweth) of Wheatfield, IN and Michael John Chynoweth (Becky Stacy) of East Grand Rapids, MI. She has two grandchildren, Violet Mae Stacy Chynoweth, and Roscoe Raymond Stacy Chynoweth.

Funeral Mass will be held on July 23, 2024, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church , located 525 S. Broad St. Griffth, Indiana 46319 with a final viewing from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM when Mass begins. Burial will follow at St. John/St. Joe Cemetery in Hammond, Indiana. Friends may meet with the family on July 22, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at White Funeral Home , located at 921 W Glen Park (45th) Ave. Griffith, Indiana 46319.

She spent her early working career as a secretary at Sinclair Oil and even later in life recounted the pride she felt working at Sinclair. At the time that her children were born, Marilynn became a full-time caregiver, and spent many years raising her children and supporting them in their many hobbies and interests.

Marilynn cherished the time she spent on her many personal pursuits and enjoyed a life rich with hobbies, friendships, and faith. For over 50 years, she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and enjoyed attending meetings, parties, and holidays together with the lifelong friends that she made through this organization, and their families.

She served as the Superintendent of the Lake County Fair Flower Exhibition for 27 years. Marilynn was a Master Gardener and loved the time she spent gardening and sharing her knowledge.

Marilynn and her family were parishioners of St. Mary Catholic Church of Griffith for many years, attending Sunday mass regularly and sending both of her children to St. Mary's School.

Marilynn and Raymond remained in their home for over 50 years and relocated to Grand Rapids, MI in September 2021, allowing for time to be spent with her grandchildren. Marilynn truly loved children and found great joy in the time she spent with them.
