George J. Thiel age 92 of Griffith, passed away on Saturday July 7, 2018. He is survived by his children Michael Thiel, Larry (Robin) Thiel, and Sandra (Sam) Chen; grandchildren Joshua (Elizabeth)Thiel, Matthew Thiel, Tommy (fiancée Kristin Black)Thiel, Danny Thiel,  Candice (Ryan), and Carson Chen; great grandchildren Andrew, Kate, George, and Betty. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friend Debbie Meadows. George was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Helen, his wife of 66 years Peggy, and by his siblings Bill (Ethel), Clarence (Mary), Francis (Marge), and Elizabeth (Bob) Schiesser.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday July 11, 2018 at 10:00am Directly at St. Mary Catholic Church located at 525 N. Broad St. in Griffith with Fr. Theodore Mens celebrating. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville.

Friends may meet with the family on Tuesday July 10th from 3-9:00pm at White Funeral Home located at 921 W. 45th Ave. in Griffith. There will be an afternoon wake service at 4:00pm on Tuesday.

George was a WWII Army Veteran and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary Men's Club, St. John VFW #717, and the Griffith American Legion Post #66. He was a member of the Griffith Fire Dept. for over 60 years, serving as Chief for 29 years. George retired from Christenson Chevrolet in Highland after 45 years. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, and fishing and he was a former coach in Griffith Little League, and Griffith Girls' Softball. George also assisted at all Griffith High School sporting events.
