Obituary

Chester B. Rhoten, aka "Sam", age 90, of Lowell, formerly of Griffith, passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

He is survived by his children, John (Pamela) Rhoten and Laurie (David) Sexton. His grandchildren; Bryan (Sarah) Rhoten, Daniel (Katlin) Rhoten, Lindsay (Brandon) Helton, Katie (Bryan Smith) Sexton, and Jason (Ali McLean) Rhoten. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Mason, Blake, Drew, Molly, Elliot, Eliza, Jaeden, and Austin. Chester also leaves behind his beloved little dog, Buddy, and his brother, Fred Rhoten.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilmer and Nannie Rhoten; his beloved wife, Lois Rhoten; and his siblings, Eddie Rhoten, Ruby Malone, Bertie Pennington, Dorothy Murphy, and David Rhoten.

Friends may meet with the family on Friday, August 7, 2026, at White Funeral Home (921 W. Glen Park Ave. Griffith, IN) from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. With Pastor Brandon Rukes officiating. Burial will follow service at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville.

Chester retired from SCM Corporation in Hammond. He was a member of the American Legion (Post 66) and VFW Post 9982 in Griffith. Chester was the owner of Honeysuckle Mobile Home Park.

He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed watching stock car racing, fishing, camping at Hoffman Lake and Fanchers campground in Tennessee, gambling (casinos, scratch offs, and pull tabs), throwing horseshoes, corn hole, and card games.  He loved going to the Badlands to ride his four-wheeler. He also enjoyed attending car shows (driving his 1966 Monterey) and visiting his homeland of Virginia.
