Thomas D. Eaton of the Miller Beach section of Gary, Indiana, passed away in
the early morning of Sunday, January 14, 2018, after a long battle with cancer.
Tom was born on April 14, 1937 in Perrysville, Pennsylvania to Harry D. &
Virginia Eaton, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Anita
Underwood, and his companion, Patricia Cronin of Miller Beach.
A graduate of. Duquesne University, Tom had both undergraduate and graduate
degrees. In his 20's, he was drafted into the Army where he served in the
Counter Intelligence Corps in Europe, expanding his love of cooking, food and
language. Working for US Steel after discharge from the Army, he moved to
Gary some 40 years ago.
Always active in his community, Tom was often the only non-parent at Wirt high
school football games. He was a founding member of the Miller Garden Club; he
sat on the board of the Miller Community Fund and the Miller 'Citizens
Corporation, where he wrote the Miller Message newsletter for over 20 years.
Tom was also an active member of St. Mary's of the l.ake, parish and served on
the Parish Council.
Tom's funeral mass will be held at St. Mary's on Monday, the 22nd of January at
10 am.
A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, January zs" at 3 pm at the
Aquatorium in Marquette Park. Refreshments will be served after the
celebration.
