John Slavena Jr. age 89 of Crown Point, formerly of Highland passed away on Thursday September 19, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Judy; children Lisa (Brian) Bartock, Amy (Bill) Zemaitis, Jeff (Kim) Slavena and Michael Slavena; grandchildren Kyle, Alissa, Jacob, Blair, Billy, Jeffery, Nyssa, Hannah, Matthew, Bryce, Zoey, Emma and Ella; great-grandchildren Emmett and Elliott; also by his brothers Charles (late Pat) Slavena, Bill (Joanne) Slavena; and nieces Diane and Karen.
John was preceded in death by his parents John and Marie, and son Johnny.
Friends may meet with the family on Sunday September 22, 2019 from 2:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at White Funeral Home located at 921 W. 45th Avenue Griffith. Private services will be held on Monday September 23, 2019.
John was an Air Force Veteran and a retired electrician at Inland Steel after 44 years. John was a former Drag Racer at U.S. 30 Speedway and he loved “tinkering” in his garage with his children and grandchildren. After his retirement from Inland Steel, John was employed by various hardware stores but most notably Von Tobel Lumber in Schererville. John enjoyed woodworking and building furniture in his spare time. He was a lover of Jazz music and a “John of All Trades”.
